While a standard MOT test costs no more than £54.85, things can start to get expensive if your vehicle fails. By regular maintaining your car and doing regular check ups you can help prevent more costly repairs done the line.

Here are some common MOT fails and how to avoid them:

Lights and signals -

A common MOT fail is faulty lights and signals. Check that all lights, including headlights, brake lights, indicators, and fog lights, are working correctly. Replace any blown bulbs before your MOT test.

Tyres -

Tyres with insufficient tread depth or damage can lead to an MOT fail. Ensure that your tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around the entire circumference. Also, check for any punctures or cuts in the tyre wall, which could cause the tyre to fail the test.

Brakes -

Worn or damaged brake pads, discs, or drums can lead to an MOT fail. Check your brake pads and discs for wear and replace them if necessary.

Suspension -

Faulty suspension can cause your vehicle to fail the MOT test. Check that your car's suspension is working correctly and replace any worn or damaged components.

Windscreen - A damaged windscreen can cause an MOT fail. Check for any cracks or chips and replace the windscreen if necessary.

Exhaust system - A damaged or corroded exhaust system can cause an MOT fail. Check for any leaks, cracks, or damage in the exhaust system and replace any faulty components.

Emissions - Your vehicle must meet the required emissions standards to pass the MOT test. Regularly servicing your car and ensuring that it is running correctly can help to keep emissions within the acceptable limits.

To avoid these common MOT fails, it is important to keep your car regularly maintained and to address any issues as soon as they arise. You can carry out a pre-MOT inspection yourself or take your car to a qualified mechanic for an inspection before your test to identify and fix any potential issues beforehand.

Additionally if you’re always forgetting when your next MOT test is due, make sure you take advantage of our MOT reminder tool here at HP Motors.
